San Martín de los Andes is located in the Southwest of Neuquén province and it preserves the charm of a typical alpine village. Set on the shores of Lake Lácar, it has a population of about 20,000 inhabitants who live in harmony with the landscape.

The city is surrounded by Lanín National Park and only 20 km to the East you will find the Chapelco Ski Resort with its excellent trails and modern lifts.

During the summer months, fishing, sailing, trekking, and rafting are all enjoyed.

Excursions

* Seven-Lake Circuit

This route links the villages of San Martin de los Andes and Villa la Angostura. Just 110 Km. of journey where we can appreciate seven wonderful mirrors of water, panoramic natural vantage points and a rainforest with cascades, flora and fauna of the region.

* The Arrayán vantage point

From there you can have a delightful view of the entire waterfront of Lake Lácar and the downtown area. To get there, the road is a continuous access, amidst the thick foliage of cypresses. They journey takes one hour by car (10 km) and half a day on foot (5 Km).

 

* Mandolas vantage point

Setting off from the pier on Lake Lácar and going over a small bridge, we reach the main road. After a while, we get to the palisade marking the access to the lands of the Mapuche community. We get to this incredible viewpoint after a walk that crosses several roads framed by cypresses, coihues, oaks and radales. Half and hour ahead, we end up in “La Islita", a marvellous scenery with white sandy beaches and animals pasturing among fences and fruit trees.

* Villa Quila Quina

This is a trip that takes half-day by car, where you will enjoy a natural bathing resort nestled in the lands of the Mapuche community Curruhuinca. Very near that place, there is an organized camping site crossing the Arroyo Grande where you can camp.

* Lake Lolog

It is a place of white extensive beaches, ideal to have picnics and spend the day enjoying the open air and the landscape framed by a panoramic view of the lake

* Yuco Hua-Mun

It is an excursion to know the heart of the Andean-Patagonian Forest; the Valdivian Forest, where the vegetation grows to form a tunnel thanks to rainfalls. The trip by water takes two hours each tract; by land, it is a 94 Km. round trip.

* Trekking

The Lanín Volcano is 3.776 meters above sea level; to climb it is necessary to make it in two days and to spend the night in one of its three mountain refuges. It is almost mandatory to carry basic equipment that includes: trekking boots, pickets, crampons, energy-giving food, warm clothes, a sleeping bag, a heater, sunglasses, gloves, a first-aid kit and a lantern.
When reaching the summit the volcanoes Villaruca and Male can be seen on the Chilean side; to the south the Tronador, the Punteagudo Mt and the Osorno Volcano. To the north: The Llaima volcano, the Cerro Peineta, the lakes and sometimes even the shores of the Pacific Ocean.

* Rafting

The most popular river in the region to go rafting is Hua-Hum River, but there are also other rivers such as the Aluminé River and the Tracura among others. It is possible to cross the Andes on board a rubber boat through the Valdivian Forest . The journey finishes in Pirihueico, in Chile, for that reason it is necessary to take all documentation to leave the country. 8 Km. of adventure and amusement in rapids grade 2 for the whole family.

* Horseback riding

In San Martin de los Andes rides can be programmed covering areas from the bus station to the lake, or also around the mountain, through the forest, skirting streams and discovering cascades on guided trips. One of the most popular is the one that starts in Vega and goes to Pampa de los Radales; another one bordering Laguna Rosales; and in summer, from Cerro Chapelco to Laguna Verde.
